Philadelphia, often called the City of Brotherly Love was named by its founder, William Penn (1644-1718) and first settled in 1681.
He was the son of Sir William Penn, and was an English nobleman, writer, early Quaker, and founder of the English North American colony the Province of Pennsylvania. The name “Philadelphia” is a derived from two Greek words: (phileo) which means love and (adelphos) which means brother. William Penn envisioned "a greene Country Town, which will never be burnt, and always be wholesome" that would prosper peacefully alongside its native inhabitants and where all religions would be accepted. Philadelphia was named Philadelphia because William Penn took the name from the bible which referenced the city Philadelphia in Asia minor. Asia Minor, also known as Anatolia, Asian Turkey, the Anatolian peninsula, or the Anatolian plateau, is the westernmost part of Asia, which makes up the majority of modern-day Turkey.
