Fentanyl is a very powerful synthetic pain reliever that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a prescription drug that is also produced and used illegally as a street drug. Often used as a mixing agent with cocaine or heroin.
Common brands containing Fentanyl:
Duragesic, Abstral, Ionsys, and Subsys
Common fentanyl street names for illegal drugs: Apache, China Girl, China White, Dance Fever, Friend, Goodfellas, Jackpot, Murder 8, Tango & Cash, white heroin,Perc-O‐Pops, or Chiclets.
Fentanyl was created in 1959 as an intravenous surgical analgesic by Dr. Paul Janssen under a patent held by his company Janssen Pharmaceutica.
Fentanyl can be so powerful that no one could possibly have a high enough tolerance at the level needed to allow for continuous use.
It also carrys a high risk of addiction and dependency. Fentanyl can cause respiratory distress and even death when taken in high doses or when combined with other controlled substances such as cocaine, heroin and alcohol.
How its used:
When prescribed by a doctor, fentanyl can be given as a shot, a skin patch , or as lozenges that dissolve in the mouth like cough drops.
The illegally used form of fentanyl most often associated with overdoses around the country and the world, is made in labs. This synthetic fentanyl is sold illegally as a powder, dropped onto blotter paper, put in eye droppers and nasal sprays, or made into pills disguised to look like other prescription opioids.
How Fentanyl affects the brain:
Like opioid drugs such as heroin, morphine, and others, fentanyl works by binding to the body's opioid receptors, found in the areas of the brain that control pain and emotions.
After taking opioids for extended periods of times (often years), the brain adapts to the drug, diminishing its sensitivity, making it hard to feel pleasure from anything besides the drug. When people become addicted, it is extremely difficult to turn off the addition.
Many people become like zombies as any opioid drug slowly and effectively take over their lives. Many don't realize or simply don't care until the damage is done
