Give your charater(s) depth. Don't just describe the heartless 'Monster' who feeds on the blood of humans or animals in the day or night then retreats into the shadows while covering his or her mouth with a cape, instead describe whats left of them that is human or what used to be human. Since vampires are seen as monsters who feed on the blood of the living, describe them from a human perspective.
Make your characters feel remorse for feeding on humans or killing to survive. Make them remember what its like to be human if in fact they were once human. Give them an emotional attachment such as the love for a child, brother, sister or lover. Make your characters see and feel the error in their ways. Create an emotional tragedy such as the death of a loved one at hands of the characters enemy. This will make good for an emotionally charged story.
