Shooting stars are actually not stars at all. They're actually tiny bits of space dust and rock called meteoroids that flash across the night sky producing a bright light that looks like a star as the meteoroid burns up during its decent to earth, therefore, giving them (meteoroids) the name shooting star. If any part of the meteoroid survives burning up and actually hits the Earth, that remaining bit is then called a meteorite.
