While some people believe that they can file as head of household as a single person (living alone), this is not the case. You can file in person at your local tax office or you can efile your tax return using the Head of Household filing status only if you meet all three of the following Head of Household filing status requirements:
1. You were not married (you were single, divorced, or legally separated), or were "considered unmarried" on the last day of the tax year.
2. You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the entire year.
3. You have a qualifying person who lived with you in the home for more than half the year, with the exception of temporary absences (a dependent parent is not required to live with you). They might still maintain their own home with your help or live in a nursing home or other care facility, which you help pay for and you can still quality as head of household.
