Joel Scott Osteen was born in Houston, Texas on March 5, 1963 to parents John Osteen and Dolores Pilgrim Osteen. He attended Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma from 1981 to 1982 before returning home and suggested to his parents that he set up a television ministry for Lakewood Church.
Fact: Joel was very shy and was not always comfortable speaking in front of large crowds. He preferred staying behind the camera.
He married his wife Victoria Iloff in 1987 and they have two children; Alexandra and Jonathan Osteen.
Joels father, John, founded Lakewood Church back in 1959. The son of a Texas cotton farmer, John Osteen was a Southern Baptist minister before his faith took on a more charismatic turn in the late 1950s. He founded his own nondenominational church in a predominantly black (African-American) neighborhood in Houston, and over the next four decades nurtured it into a dynamic and thriving congregation.
By early 1999, John Osteen's health had taken a turn for the worse as he began to noticeably deteriorate due to his heart and kidney problems. He asked his son Joel to deliver the Sunday sermon, and Joel refused as he had often done in the past because he was shy, but he called his father back a few minutes later and told him that he would do it.
Nervous and wearing a pair of his father's shoes for emotional support, Osteen spoke that day in front of an audience of 6,000, and the mass of churchgoers responded openly to his easygoing style and infectious attitude. Eleven days later, his father died of a heart attack.
Two weeks after the death of his father, Joel began preaching regularly with little experience and later that year, Joel was named the successor and became the pastor of his father's church. He was officially installed as the new senior pastor of Lakewood Church on October 3, 1999.
Since then, he has grown to become a world renowned preacher/ American televangelist based in Houston, Texas at Lakewood church.
