As DSLR or (Digital single-lens reflexare) are becoming more and more affordable, many people are wondering if it is time for them to switch from a point and shoot camera to the ever popular DSLR.
Nowadays, point and shoot cameras (compared to their dinosaur counterparts) have a long list of newer features and capabilities, compared to even slightly older versions.
These new features now include GPS, face-detection, smile detection and many other new technologies that are making their way into the point and shoot market often over-saturating it with new cameras and making it more difficult for people to choose the right camera for their needs.
A similar thing is also happening in the DSLR world, where manufacturers are dividing the market into multiple segments, trying to capture a range of potential customers.
Difference between the two:
The main differences between the two is that the point and shoot has small sensor, and fixed lens, whereas the DSLR has bigger sensors and interchangeable lenses.
In a point and shoot camera, the sensor is always on, always receiving an image. The way they focus is simply looking at the contrast in the image in a certain area, and it adjusts the lens until the contrast increases.
This is because if something is out of focus, it is more blurry, and therefore a solid line does not appear.
It tweaks the focus until there is more contrast. There is no technological reason why the point and shoot camera could not focus anywhere in the image, but typically there are algorithms that make a best guess as far as what you are targeting to take a photo.
Most point and shoot cameras have an electronic viewfinder or are rangefinder type, whereas all the DSLR has optical viewfinder that shows the image the lens are targeted.
From entry-level to advanced professional.
DSLR camera:
DSLR cameras offers more power, speed, and features than a point and shoot model.
DSLR cameras allow you to manually control certain aspects of a shot, while most point and shoot cameras work best when shooting in fully automatic mode.
Digital SLR models cost more and are larger than point and shoot cameras.
