The very thought of your dog eating his or her own stool is enough to make anyone vomit.
After all, we're not supposed to eat what comes out. Right? Right!
Dogs eat poop for various reasons, based on their age, their training, their living conditions (How well the owner takes care of he or she) and/or their diets. These are all contributing factors as to why your dog may be eating poop.
To understand beter, before dogs were domesticated, they were scavengers, living off of whatever they could find. Dogs commonly fed on the waste of other animals (and other dogs) and have done so for thousands of years. Poop eating may just be a remnant of dog history.
In certain situations, as with a newborn litter of puppies, eating poop is instinctual and completely normal. A mother with pups is wired to keep her den clean so as not to attract predators with scent cues. Thus, she quite often will clean up after her young by consuming their poop.
For households with multiple dogs there is often a pecking order of dominant and submissive roles. Submissive dogs will sometimes eat the stool of their dominant counterparts.
The following are a few tips that may help curve your dogs poop eating appetite:
1. Store bought methods:
By making your dog’s poop taste really bad, the following products will deter your dog from eating his own waste.
21st Century Dog Stool Eating Deterrent Coprophagia Deterrence Veterinarian Formulated 75 Chewables
Only Natural Pet Stool Eating Deterrent for Dogs and Puppies - Stop Stool Eating Coprophagia with Digestive Enzymes- Pet Supplement - 60 Bacon Flavored Soft Chews
Four Paws Potty Mouth Dog Coprophagia Prevention Chewable Tablets, 120 Count
They seem to work wonders for some dog owners and may work for you.
2. Do-It-Yourself Solutions:
Coat stools with hot sauce or lemon juice. Add a few tablespoons of canned pumpkin to his food bowl each day. Pumpkin tastes good in food, but disgusting in dog poop.
Add meat tenderizer to your dog’s food (it will make the dog waste taste VERY bad).
Keep waste picked up on a regular basis.
(Always remember: When doody calls, always be there to clean it up).
