Thanks to a deal inked between Toronto-based lyric licensing company LyricFind and The search giant, people who perform searches for song lyrics will see them appear right on Google's search results page. The partnership between the two companies also creates a new revenue stream for artists.
While the terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, LyricFind CEO Darryl Ballantyne has been quoted saying that it will be “a significant revenue stream.” one that may result in publishers and songwriters earning millions of dollars.
The payout for artists is based on impressions. Royalties are earned whenever a set of lyrics is displayed in Google’s search results.
So the more frequent someone searches a song, the greater the payout for the artist. Unfortunate for sites that display lyrics on their sites for a living as they will see a major drop in traffic, but this deal between the two companies adds legitimacy and artist can trust that they will get paid.
