The most common cause of ringing in the ears or (tinnitus) is normally due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds. Up to 90% of people with tinnitus have some level of noise-induced hearing loss. The noise causes permanent damage to the sound-sensitive cells of the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear.
Other causes of ringing in the inner ear might include whiplash, head injuries, ear wax, or side effects of medications.
Normal ringing in the ears naturally goes away on its own. Most times you probably won't notice as you shift focus to something else during the day. I'm extreme cases, the ringing in your ear may last as long as 48 hours depending on the underlying cause.
Note: Tumors in the ear or on the auditory nerve may also cause ringing in the ears.
