A chatbot is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) or computer program designed to mimic conversation with human users, especially over the Internet. (Think Siri)
It responds by completing specific task as instructed by the person who request it but, they can also become confused with various speech patterns throwing them off subject.
Have you even said one word and someone thought you said another? Same goes for Chabots, but they are fast improving on the technology.
Chatbots are typically used in dialog systems for various practical purposes including customer service or information acquisition. Some chatbots use sophisticated natural language processing systems, but many simpler systems scan for keywords within the input then pull a reply with the most relevant keywords, or the most similar speech pattern, from a database.
Hope this helps.
